The dolls' bodies are constructed with sticks and batting and secured with strips of fabric. The heads are made of polyester fiberfill and the faces are made of fired ceramic. They are then dressed with ethnic textiles and adorned with jewelry. Each doll is unique and hand-made by an artist in New Mexico. Some are meant to be hung and some are on stands.

African Mask– The textile that you see here is called mud cloth and is hand-made and hand-dyed by the Bamana people of Mali. The dying process consists of numerous applications of mud and plant juices/teas to the cloth. He will hang upon your wall and conjure up thoughts of a distant continent.

Chief – This type of ceremonial Native American headdress, though worn only by a few tribes, was meant to display honor and courage of the man wearing it. Around his neck is a small wooden bear.  In Native American symbolism the bear signifies free in spirit as the great Wind.  It also represents courage and strength. Suspend this mask on your wall.

Whirling Dervish – He whirls and whirls, endlessly whirls in the hopes of finding truth and spiritual enlightenment.  The Whirling Dervish wears layers of “skirts” which undulate as he twirls.  He is a mystical dancer who stands between the material and cosmic worlds.  In spinning the dancer places himself in a trance and releases his body from dizziness.  He is free standing and the doll is attached to the stand.

Egyptian Blue – To the ancient Egyptians Lapis Lazuli and the color blue, in general, purportedly had life giving powers and were often displayed in their art work. This doll symbolizes an ancient blue statue of Egyptian origins.  She hangs upon your wall and you can almost hear the jingle of her jewelry.

Eskimo MaskContrary to popular thought, Eskimos did engage in face painting as did other Native American tribes, though not as frequently. The design on the face is a replica of a traditional Eskimo face painting design. He will hang upon your wall and remind you of the United States’ 50th state.

Eskimo Warrior – Living in a frigid environment, Eskimos use animal hides for clothing, with caribou being their favorite as it is warm and lightweight. Caribou hide, not being readily available, this doll wears a suit of faux fur. He is a representation of an Eskimo warrior with an authentic reproduction of a face painting design. During the festival they invite their sweethearts to eat Sister Rice, play a drum, dance, sing, give tokens to each other, and get engaged.
